An island that is popular for day trips is West Island which lies off the western edge of Sanya Bay, with an area of 2.67 square kilometres it is the second largest island in the waters around Hainan.
Approximately 20 km (8 miles) southwest of downtown Sanya lies West Island, Hainan Province’s second largest island.
A playground for holidaymakers
The island is one of six legal spots for snorkeling and scuba diving in Sanya. Its surrounding waters belong to a National Coral Reef Nature Reserve. Underwater visibility ranges from 10 to 15 meters, permitting divers to enjoy a plethora of spectacular scenes.
Stroll down the beach on West Island in the late afternoon and, aside from people relaxing on the sands, you may see couples having their wedding photographs taken and local lads fishing in the shallows with hand-thrown nets. The island also offers a range of water sports including fishing, “flying fish” boat rides, kayaking, diving, gliding, and jet skiing out in the bay.
Fishing Village on the island
West Island is not only famous for its very picturesque tropical sceneries and has been home to fishing tribes for generations.
After the year’s of reconstruction, the fishing village on the West Island has taken on a new look and opened to the public recently.
The traditional houses have been repaired, and public facilities such as a floating public library, a marine themed exhibition hall, and inns have been built. Many residents now live in new houses and have extra rooms they can use as home stays.
In 2017, the village was named by China’s Ministry of Agriculture as the China’s most beautiful fishing village.
Creative cultural village on the island
Local tourism authorities and village heads believe that the traditional fishing village has tourism potential, and are working to develop the village into a popular destination.
The West Island Fishing Village, once an ancient village with a history of more than 500 years, was transformed since 2018, when the local government launched an initiative to turn the area into a creative art cultural fishing village.
An eco-sustainability service center was set up on the village, where overseas and domestic artists and local residents are encouraged to use the recyclable and regenerative ocean waste to add their artistic touch to the streets, homes and businesses of West Island.
As part of efforts to help the fishermen on the West Island, the local government also invited Canadian Craig Anderson to train them in making artwork from recycled materials and sell them as souvenirs to tourists.
Nowadays, tourists visiting here can marvel at some of the most beautiful street art on the island including the coral baby mascot, colorful fishing ships, a series of rural wall paintings with discarded wood, clay and other raw materials and more.
