The First Tianya Haijiao Wedding Festival was held in 1996. Due to the wedding festivals, expo, and honeymoon island forum events held over the years, Sanya has gained increasing attention as a wedding tourism destination.

Sanya is one of the most popular wedding tourism destinations in China, due in part to the city’s tropical beaches, ocean waters, islands, and reefs. The city’s wedding tourism industry is listed as one of the six most thriving and characteristic tourism industries in Hainan Province. In 2018, wedding tourists, who accounted  for about six percent of total tourists visiting Sanya, were responsible for nearly 20 percent of total tourism spending in Sanya.

According to Mr. Zhong Fengmao, Deputy Consulting Director of the Sanya Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports Bureau, Sanya will undertake new, more innovative measures with the aim of making the wedding fair a signature offering in the city.
