Sanya Phoenix International Airport is located about 11 kilometers west of the downtown. Bearing a major responsibility, it is the gate that connects Sanya to the whole world. Besides, both Haikou Meilan International Airport and Qionghai Bo’ao International Airport are linked to the city by high-speed railways.
Sanya Phoenix International Airport (IATA: SYX)
Sanya Phoenix International Airport sits about 11 kilometers west of the city and was put into use in July 1994. It is a 4E standard hub airport, eligible for large wide-body airliners like Boeing 747 and Airbus A340 to take off and land with a full load.The airport now has two terminals and is served by several airlines, both domestic and international, including Hainan Airlines (HU), China Southern Airlines (CZ), China Eastern Airlines (MU), Cathay Dragon (KA), China Airlines (CI), and Jeju Air (7C). The airlines connect the airports of China’s major provincial capitals, main first-tier and second-tier cities, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, and airports in Russia, Ukraine, South Korea, Japan, Kazakhstan, Thailand and other countries and regions of the “Belt and Road” Initiative. A comprehensive airline network has been built, with the annual passenger throughput exceeding 20 million.
Haikou Meilan International Airport (IATA: HAK)
Haikou Meilan International Airport was put into use in May 1999. Sitting 270 kilometers away from the downtown, the airport is next to the Meilan Railway Station for the bullet train to Sanya, which takes 1 hour 40 minutes.It is an important hub airport in China. After the completion of its Phase 2 expansion, it will meet 4F standards. In 2017, Haikou Meilan International Airport received a Five-Star Regional Airport Rating from Skytrax and became the world’s eighth airport with the Skytrax Five-Star Airport Rating. In 2019, it received a Five-Star Airport Rating again and was named the “Best Skytrax Regional Airport in China”.
Qionghai Bo’ao Airport (IATA: BAR)
Qionghai Bo’ao Airport is located in Zhongyuan County, Qionghai City, 160 kilometers away from Sanya. It takes an hour by the bullet train to transport from Bo’ao Railway Station to Sanya. It is a 4C standard airport.Qionghai Bo’ao Airport was put into use in March 2016, serving as an effective supplement to the airports in Sanya and Haikou. It is served by many airlines including China Eastern Airlines (MU), Hainan Airlines (HU), Suparna Airlines (Y8) and 9 Air (AQ), with many domestic two-way routes to places such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou.
Sanya is directly connected to the mainland through Guangdong-Hainan Railway, the first cross-sea train route in China.
Cities like Beijing and Guangzhou are directly linked by regular trains to Sanya. Meanwhile, Sanya is also an important hub on the Hainan Ring High-Speed Railway. High-speed bullet trains can travel at short intervals to Haikou, Wenchang, Dongfang and other cities in the island in a fast and convenient way
Sanya Railway Station
Sanya Railway Station is located at Yuxiu Road, Jiyang District. As the most important railway station in Sanya, it is also the
departure and arrival station of Guangdong-Hainan regular train, Hainan East Ring High-Speed Railway and Hainan West
Ring High-Speed Railway.
Yalongwan Railway Station
The easternmost station in Sanya, Yalongwan Railway Station is located at Gaoxin Road, Jiyang District. Passengers arriving at this station can visit Yalong Bay, which enjoys a reputation of being “the best bay in the world” .
Fenghuangjichang Railway Station
Fenghuangjichang Railway Station is located at Jichang Road, Tianya District. It is connected with Sanya Phoenix International Airport through a transfer platform bridge, offering an excellent experience of seamless plane-train transfer.
Yazhou Railway Station
Sitting at north of Gucheng Road, Yazhou District, Yazhou Railway Station is the westernmost station in Sanya and the closest one to Yazhou Ancient City. This railway station is divided into a high-speed session and a regular session.
The main expressways in Sanya are Hainan Island Ring Expressway and Tongjiang-Sanya Expressway. The length of the latter is 5700 kilometers, the longest among the Five Vertical and Seven Horizontal Expressways in China's National Trunk Highway System. Drivers can enjoy great road conditions and complete expressway facilities without being charged tolls.
By cruise ship
Sanya Phoenix Island International Cruise Terminal in Sanya Bay is the first international cruise port in China. Berths that are already built and put into operation can accommodate vessels of 225 thousand DWT. Being Asia’s largest home port for international cruises, the port can receive 2 million visitors a year. World-renowned cruise companies including Carnival Corporation, Royal Caribbean and Star Cruises have set up lines connecting Sanya to many domestic and international port cities, such as Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Da Nang.
The public transportation network in Sanya is very well-developed, with routes reaching almost everywhere in the city. So far, there are altogether 132 bus lines and 23 operating origin and destination stations. The distance-graduated fare system is applied in Sanya, with an initial fare of 2 Yuan, gradually increasing depending on the distance traveled. A trip in the city usually costs about 2 to 12 Yuan. The core hours of the service will be between 6:00 am to 20:00 pm. The tram line in Sanya is also very convenient. It has 15 stations and runs from Sanya Railway station to Jiangang Road.Many hotels (resort villages) offer free shuttle buses to the city center and various attractions. You may consult the hotel staff for the route information and the timetable.
Car rental and self-driving
Car rental business is very popular in Sanya. From economy cars, luxury vehicles to SUV, there is a wide range of option for you. At present, both international companies like Hertz and Avis and domestic ones like eHi and Shenzhou are operating in Sanya, providing convenient options for you to collect and return the vehicle at the airport, railway stations and the major bay areas.
Depending on the car model and the comfort level, there are two types of taxis in Sanya, Type 1 and Type 2. For Type 1, the initial charge is 11 Yuan with 2.5 kilometers, and 2.4 Yuan per kilometer for additional distances.
