After arriving at your destination by taxi, it is now possible to hold your bank card against the driver’s phone and process the fare payment same as at a POS terminal. Taking only a few seconds, it is an easy and convenient way for people who are not a part of China’s mobile payment ecosystem to take a taxi. According to Russian tourist Leila, the "Worry Free Hainan" payment platform is astonishingly quick and easy to use. “With this platform, there is no need to worry about being caught out unable to pay for key goods and services when visiting Hainan.”
After launching in March of this year, the first pilot mobile phone POS were trialled by the Sanya taxi industry. Now, the platform is expanding to Haikou’s taxi industry.
Sanya Technology Investment Group is one of the companies behind the development and launch of Worry Free Hainan. Their GM, Xu Bin, told reporters that over 1,000 livery cab drivers (or about one third of Sanya’s taxis) have connected to the platform. In order to prevent and control risks such as money laundering, credit card fraud, and credit card cash withdrawal, Worry Free Hainan is currently undergoing a 3-month long trial operation period focusing on the taxi industry. In the near future—according to risk control requirements and the central bank’s opinions—it will gradually expand to other applications such as dining, accommodation, travel, shopping and entertainment.
The platform's defining feature is that foreigners need not register a card with it, download an APP, change their payment habits in any way, or upload personal information. So long as they have a UnionPay, VISA, or MasterCard badged credit card or have an Apple Pay account which has previously been linked to a UnionPay, VISA, or MasterCard account, they can easily pay for goods and services.
Not only convenient for people from outside China, Worry Free Hainan is also super easy to set up for people who want to receive payments. So long as they have an Android phone with NFC capability, it's basically a plug and play app that can quickly replace traditional POS card readers.
