01 / Spotlight Filmmaker: Omnes Films
Starting from a small town, looking at the world
The "Spotlight Filmmaker" section introduces filmmakers or film groups that shine in the world cinema through thematic screenings. This year, we turn our attention to "Omnes Films" across the ocean, inviting audiences to focus on the world's emerging images with a future-oriented perspective.
Within a year, launching four new works, as a dazzling star in contemporary film creation, Omnes Films redefines and experiments with cinema, skillfully blending personal and collective memories, as well as symbols of regions and cultures, forming a film style that is both unique and deeply resonant.
These films are like an "expanded universe," chapters that echo each other, jointly writing a world constructed by images that is full of sensibility and wisdom. There, the subtly permeating surrealism and the not-yet-fully-condensed nostalgia are intertwined, and in this intersection of reality and imagination, innovation and nostalgia, a dreamlike glimmer is presented—the enduring vitality of cinema continues to shine.
About Omnes Films
Omnes Films is an independent film collective primarily based in Los Angeles, USA. They claim their mission is to "fill the gaps in contemporary cinema," with an overall style that focuses more on atmosphere creation than narrative storytelling, concentrating on various forms of cultural decline in the 21st century. Regardless of the subject matter or genre, they strive to create films that are conceptually innovative and have never been seen before.
Most of their works are produced collectively by group members: Taormina and Davies are not only members of the same drone music group but also serve as producers for each other's films, and their debut features were both photographed by Carson Lund. Michael Basta served as a co-producer for "Ham on Rye" and as a co-writer, co-producer, and assistant director for "High and Slow" before he is currently working on his own debut feature film "Racoon," with Carson Lund also participating from the script stage.
In addition to American filmmakers, some group members have overseas backgrounds: Lorena Alvarado and Alexandra Simpson are filmmakers from Venezuela and France, respectively, who each released their feature debuts this year, "The Lost Chapter" and "Sleepless Night."
02 / Tribute to Classics
The Resonant Echoes of the Galaxy of Film History
A retrospective, a revisit, the "Tribute to Classics" section turns its gaze towards the iconic works and figures that have shaped the history of cinema—they traverse the river of time, still emitting light and resonance on the screen in a unique way, redefining the connection between film and the present.
The history of cinema is like poetry, and the "Tribute to Classics" screening section unfolds the long scroll of time. Here, we have Antonioni's existential ode woven with black and white images, "L'Eclisse" (1961, 4K restoration), and Jacques Demy's depiction of romantic splendor in "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" (1964, 4K restoration).
In addition, we engage in dialogue through "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Documentary" (2024) with the 50th anniversary of "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" (1974), re-examining its cultural heritage; we explore Jacques Demy's creative world with a panoramic view in "The World of Jacques Demy" (2024); we witness how Godard bids farewell to the world through cinema at the end of his life with "The Image Book" (2018) and the short film "Summary of the Film 'Scenario' and Its Trailer" (2024); we commemorate the great pioneer who brought Asian cinema to the international stage with "Aruna Vasudev: Showcasing Asian Cinema to the World" (2021).
This is a review of the long scroll of film history and a continuation of the spirit of cinema. From remembering pioneers to re-encountering classics, these films form the core of the "Tribute to Classics" section. They not only evoke the audience's respect for the glorious history of cinema but also inspire boundless imagination for the future of the art of film.
