2024-12-06

On December 5th Beijing time, the UNESCO Committee for the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage reviewed and approved the inclusion of China's "Traditional Spinning, Dyeing, Weaving, and Embroidery Skills of the Li Ethnic Group" from the "List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding" to the "Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity."

In 2009, the "Traditional Spinning, Dyeing, Weaving, and Embroidery Skills of the Li Ethnic Group" was included in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)'s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. This heritage item is a traditional handicraft of Li women in Hainan Province, who use natural fibers such as cotton and hemp to make clothing and other daily necessities. Through long-term practice in recognizing and utilizing plant fibers and dyes, Li women have gradually developed and formed a complete system consisting of four types of skills: spinning, dyeing, weaving, and embroidery. Textiles made from these crafts, such as贯首衣 (traditional Li jackets), bed sheets, skirts, headscarves, flower hats, wall hangings, and others, are collectively referred to as "Li Brocade."
