Hainan to Build New Airport! Construction Targeted to Start in 2025!

The Several Measures to Promote High-Quality Development of Air Logistics in Hainan Province, issued by the Hainan Open Sky Policy Task Force Office, proposes: Dongfang Airport will be positioned as a regional airport with a focus on cargo operations, aiming to commence construction in 2025.

Dongfang Airport will occupy approximately 4,500 mu (300 hectares) of land. It will feature a new 3,400-meter runway meeting 4E-class standards to accommodate mainstream passenger and cargo aircraft at full capacity. The plan includes a 60,000-square-meter terminal, cargo warehouses, and aprons, with provisions for adding a parallel runway in the future.

Airport Positioning

Haikou Meilan Airport serves as the primary regional aviation hub in Hainan, balancing passenger and cargo services, with emphasis on route network connectivity and hub functions.

Sanya Phoenix International Airport is positioned as a secondary regional hub, prioritizing passenger traffic while integrating cargo operations. It is under consideration for designation as a national air logistics hub, with its Phase III expansion project targeted for completion by late 2025.

Qionghai Boao Airport is designated as a key regional airport, enhancing cargo capabilities while supporting business aviation in Hainan. Its Phase III expansion is slated for completion by late 2025.

Dongfang Airport will be developed as a regional cargo-specialized airport, with construction planned to begin in 2025.
