Extreme Weather

Sanya lies in the tropics, and while you'll enjoy plenty of sunshine year-round, you may also encounter typhoons, heavy rain, severe lightning or high heat. To help keep your island vacation safe and worry-free, please refer to the following weather preparedness and safety guidance:

Typhoon and Heavy Rain Protection

Typhoons are typically accompanied by heavy rainfall. When a typhoon or heavy rain warning is issued by the meteorological authorities, please observe the following safety precautions:

Secure your belongings: Close and lock your room's doors and windows promptly. Move plants and other items on open balconies indoors, and secure any outdoor items that could be affected by strong winds.

Watch electricity and gas use: It's advisable to unplug non-essential electrical devices indoors. If water accumulates indoors, immediately shut off the main power supply and the gas valve.

Plan travel carefully: Minimize going outside during severe weather. If you must travel, take detours around flooded areas and stay away from high-voltage power lines, large trees, billboards and utility poles. If your vehicle stalls in deep water, do not remain inside — get out immediately and move to higher ground for safety.

Watch food and water hygiene: It's recommended to prepare an adequate supply of drinking water, food and emergency lighting in advance. Do not drink untreated water while traveling, and avoid eating food that has been soaked by rainwater or floodwater.

Severe Lightning Protection

If severe lightning occurs, please take the following precautions based on your surroundings:

Indoors: Close doors and windows and disconnect the power supply. During lightning, avoid touching water pipes, wire mesh or other exposed metal objects, avoid showering where possible, and stay away from electrical appliances.

Outdoors: Move away from the sea immediately and stop all water activities. Do not shelter under trees, and avoid using umbrellas or holding metal objects up high. Do not run or cycle quickly in the rain, and try to avoid mountaintops or other elevated areas.

High Heat Protection

When the meteorological authorities issue a high-heat warning, please take the following health precautions:

Reduce sun exposure: Try to minimize going outside during the hottest hours, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you must go out, apply sun protection and drink water proactively and regularly — don't wait until you feel thirsty.

Watch for signs of discomfort: Pay close attention to the condition of elderly companions, children and others in your group. If mild heatstroke symptoms appear — such as fatigue, dizziness or nausea — move promptly to a well-ventilated, shaded spot to rest.

Manage temperature differences sensibly: When using air conditioning indoors, avoid setting the temperature too low, to prevent discomfort caused by a large difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures. Maintain a light diet and get adequate sleep.
