The Serial Activities of the Sanya Folk Dragon Worship Ritual Intangible Cultural Heritage for the Year of the Horse Are About to Begin!
Warm Winds Arrive, Tides Rise in the South China Sea. 2026 marks the inaugural year of the 15th Five-Year Plan and the first year of the comprehensive implementation of closed customs operations at Hainan Free Trade Port. At this critical juncture of development, the Daxiao Dongtian Tourist Area in Yazhou District, Sanya City, Hainan Province, will once again host a grand marine folk culture feast. Themed “Dragon Soaring over the South China Sea, Horse Leaping over Aoshan,” the serial activities of the Sanya Folk Dragon Worship Ritual Intangible Cultural Heritage for the Year of the Horse (Bingwu Year) will be grandly held from March 17 to 21, 2026. This event, which integrates traditional folk customs, immersive experiences, and cultural tourism innovation, represents both the inheritance and revitalization of Sanya’s local intangible cultural heritage and a vibrant practice of promoting cultural-tourism integration and building an international tourism consumption center with culture at its core during the inaugural year of the Hainan Free Trade Port’s closed customs operation.

Event Highlights:
As a prelude to the main event, an online collection activity for a mountain-climbing event will be launched in the early stage, and the exclusive IP image “Ao Xiaojiu” will be unveiled. On March 17, the Dragon King Market will open on both sides of the Dragon King Bieyuan (Villa), featuring intangible cultural heritage exhibitions, limited-edition cultural and creative products, Qiongya (Hainan) delicacies, and folk experience activities. Visitors can observe intangible cultural heritage techniques such as Li brocade weaving, Li pottery making, and rattan weaving, taste local delicacies like dragon-shaped sugar paintings and Yazhou sour noodles, and participate in interactive games like “Snatch the Dragon Pearl” ring toss and “Brave the Dragon Gate” pitch-pot, experiencing the rich folk atmosphere in advance.

On March 20, the second day of the second lunar month, known as “Dragon Raises Head,” the serial activities will reach their climax. Events will unfold layer by layer, starting from the “Seeking Cultural Roots · Asking the Way” procession and worship ritual, to the Li and Miao ethnic groups’ welcoming dances and IP flash mob parades. The core segment, the “Moving · Dragon Patrol” Dragon Worship Ritual, will showcase the unique charm of Hainan’s marine folk customs, embodying the people’s prayers for favorable weather and prosperous fisheries.

As a municipal-level intangible cultural heritage item, the Sanya Folk Dragon Worship Ritual has been passed down through generations for many years and has become an important events of Hainan’s marine culture. While adhering to its traditional core, this year’s event innovatively incorporates IP scenarization and narrative-driven concepts. Using the “Dragon King” and “Dragon Horse” as core elements, it connects landmarks such as Yazhou Xuegong (Confucian Temple) and Daxiao Dongtian, launching limited cultural and creative products like “Dragon King’s Blessing” and “Aotou Jigu.” This transforms visitors from mere “sightseers” into “participants in the narrative,” achieving an upgrade of cultural symbols into an immersive experience.
Protecting and inheriting folk culture, enhancing cultural innovation and creativity:

Holding this event at the significant starting point of the Hainan Free Trade Port’s closed customs operation carries profound meaning. The facilitation of inbound travel and the upgrading of the cultural tourism industry are driving Hainan’s transformation from traditional sightseeing to in-depth experiences, with local folk culture being the core competitiveness for high-quality cultural tourism development. As an important component of the “Excellent Traditional Chinese Culture in Yazhou” serial activities, this event leverages intangible cultural heritage as a medium to activate new cultural tourism formats, enriching the travel experience while strengthening the public’s cultural identity. It injects cultural momentum into Sanya’s efforts to build itself into a core area of an international tourism consumption center and helps Hainan’s unique folk culture shine on a broader world stage.
