Want to discover a different side of Sanya? Why not start with its museums?

In most people’s minds, Sanya is synonymous with sunshine and waves. Yet deep within this tropical coastal city lie several keys that unlock the “door of time.” From ancient fossils dating back millions of years to rare deep-sea shellfish, from millennia-old Li ethnic brocade to priceless Huanghuali wood artistry, Sanya’s museum cluster bears witness to historical transformations while preserving profound cultural memories. If you wish to delve into the cultural fabric of this island while escaping the summer heat, step into these four museums to embark on a journey across time and space.

Sanya Natural History Museum

Features: Millennia of Time and Space, the Mysteries of Ancient Life

As Hainan Province’s sole natural history museum, this institution stands as a vivid encyclopedia of Earth’s evolutionary history. Its collection boasts over 742 rare specimens, highlighted by the Jehol Biota fossil series from western Liaoning—hailed by UNESCO as “the most astonishing discovery of the 20th century.” The core collection centers on Mesozoic Liaoning-Heilongjiang biota fossils, including unique specimens such as Sanyapterosaurus, Liaoningoparadiesofructum, ichthyosaurs, dinosaur embryos, and crinoids. Among these, the Sanyapterosaurus fossil stands as the world’s most complete specimen of its kind, earning it the status of the museum’s crown jewel. Employing modern audio-visual technology, the museum vividly recreates the prehistoric world of 140 million years ago, immersing visitors in ancient times to witness the origins and evolution of life.

Travel Tip: The museum is located within the Da Xiaodongtian Scenic Area. We recommend setting aside at least half a day to explore cultural relics and coastal views after your museum visit, enjoying both natural and cultural enrichment.

Sanya Shanhaibei Cultural Museum

Feature: Deep Blue Treasures and Marine Ecological Aesthetics

The ocean not only nurtures countless forms of life but also yields innumerable artistic treasures. Spanning 3,850 square meters, this museum houses over 40,000 marine-related artifacts, making it a must-visit destination for enthusiasts of oceanic culture. Its collection is most notably defined by its giant clam specimens. Revered as the “King of Shells,” the giant clam represents both a precious living resource and, in its fossilized form, a frozen chronicle of oceanic evolution. The collection spans terrestrial and marine fossils dating back millions of years, diverse marine shell specimens, ancient shell currency, ritual vessels, Buddhist relics, utilitarian objects, ornaments, and other artworks. It chronicles the political, economic, cultural, and religious dimensions of ancient Chinese society. The sheer volume, diversity, and value of these artifacts make this collection exceptionally rare among giant clam collections worldwide.

Travel Tip: The museum operates on an appointment-based system. We recommend checking official channels in advance to confirm opening hours.

Sanya Nanshan Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum

Features: Living Heritage and Ethnic Memories of Qiongya

As Hainan’s first dedicated exhibition hall for intangible cultural heritage, this museum serves as a living cultural ark, systematically preserving and showcasing the unique ethnic memories of Hainan. It highlights the thousand-year-old spinning, dyeing, weaving, and embroidery techniques of the Li ethnic group. Through multimedia interactions, visitors can also listen to the timeless folk songs of Yazhou.

Travel Tip: The museum is located on the second floor of the International Intangible Cultural Heritage Center within the Nanshan Cultural Tourism Area. Combine your visit with a pilgrimage to the Nanshan Sea Goddess of Mercy statue for a comprehensive cultural journey spanning religious traditions and folk heritage.

Sanya Yongtao Huanghuali Museum

Features: Oriental Artistry at Its Finest and “Golden Wood”

In traditional Chinese culture, Hainan Huanghuali wood is celebrated as the “Golden Wood.” This museum houses over 8,000 Huanghuali artifacts, showcasing the unique charm of this rare timber through its natural beauty, intricate grain patterns, and the aromatic essence of its resin. The museum features a Huanghuali Appreciation Zone, an Antique Furniture Exhibition Area, and an Agarwood Gallery. Here, visitors can not only admire the masterful carving artistry but also appreciate the “unity of heaven and humanity” aesthetic philosophy embodied in traditional Chinese furniture.
